Elijah's room makeover

BACK TO PROJECTS

Charities Angels and My Dream Room project are putting their wings to work to make hopes happen!

This past week, hope took on the look of a brand new personalized bedroom for recently adopted Elijah. Our My Dream Room designer, Debbie Waxman, worked with 13-year old Elijah to identify his favorite themes, hobbies and characters to create his dream room. Elijah’s room was fantastically fashioned with Star Wars, Pokemon, and Lego motifs replete with disco balls and laser lights.

Elijah’s dream room was Charities Angels & My Dream Room’s inaugural renovation project in cooperation with Adoptions Together. My Dream Room was founded for the purpose of bringing a one-of-a-kind space to children moving from foster care into a permanent home. Project lead, Debbie Waxman, believes that providing a customized living space to transitioning teens is a critical step in contributing to a secure, confident, and valued child.

Elijah was placed in foster care at the age of nine and between his 9th and 13th years he changed homes 5 times while enrolling in 7 different schools. This frequency of transition during foster care is not unique to Elijah. My Dream Room aspires to partner with adoption organizations, adoptive families, and children in need of permanent placement, to bring stability and security to this initial transitional phase.

Elijah joined his adoptive mom and dad and 9-year old brother in February, relocating from the West Coast. Charities Angels was able to connect with Elijah’s adoptive family through his adoption agency and social worker, to make his dream room possible. Elijah’s new room was created while he was attending school and was unveiled by several Charities Angels’ board members, Debbie Waxman and Elijah’s family. Elijah’s mom said, “It was a joy to watch his ideas about what he’d like in a room come to life. Most foster kids never have their own room and his reaction when he came home from school was especially wonderful.”

Charities Angels and My Dream Room are proud to put our collective wings to work to see hope in action.
